After years of telling visitors, we did not misspell Russian, a new sign replaced the old. When our garden was dedicated in 1939 R-U-S-I-N was the correct transliteration using an old Hungarian base to get from the Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet. Currently, the proper spelling is R-U-S-Y-N and is based on an international transliteration system. We have added Carpatho to help people understand that our ancestors come from the area around the Carpathian Mountains.
With help from The Timo Foundation and Holden Parks Trust we were able to change our garden sign from Rusin Garden to Carpatho-Rusyn Garden in 2022. We no longer get questions about misspelling!
During One World Day in 2022, we had a ceremony to dedicate the new sign in our garden which now reads Carpatho-Rusyn Cultural Garden. Present for the dedication are from left to right - Barb Popovich, President of the Friends of the Carpatho-Rusyn Garden, Maria Silvestri, President of the Timo Foundation, John Righetti, President of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society, John Krenisky, Trustee of "Friends" organization and Diana Essock, mistress of ceremony and Cultural Garden Representative. Not shown are Paul and Fran Burik and Greg Smith - Trustees.
Here is a video of John Righetti explaining Rusin to Carpatho-Rusyn
