Many Rusyn settled in the Tremont area to be near the jobs in the steel mills which were within walking distance. The area is no longer populated by Rusyns but many of the landmarks associated with that earlier time remain.

Our community garden is a vibrant and thriving space where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to grow fresh, healthy food and build community. We have over 120 plots available for rent, as well as a variety of communal beds where members of our community work together to grow food for local food banks. Our garden is also home to a variety of fruit trees, berry bushes and herbs, which are available for all members to enjoy. In addition to gardening, we offer a wide variety of educational workshops, social events and volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Come join us and be a part of something truly special!

Portrait of Father Joseph J. Hanulya 1873 - 1962
Father Hanulya was a priest at Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church in Tremont. His passion to preserve the cultural legacy of the Rusin people inspired the creation of the Rusin Elite Society (later renamed the Rusin Educational Society), the first caretakers of our garden. The Rusin Garden Association was created to be the organization responsible for the garden.
